Doric dictionary

So, Doric is the dialect of the north east of Scotland.  I'm certainly not 'broad Aberdonian' however, I do drop in a wee doric word here and there!  So here are a selection of my most used doric words.

  • Aye aye - hi
  • black affronted - embarrased
  • bleezin - drunk
  • blootered - drunk
  • bosie - hug
  • briks - trousers
  • ca - pull
  • canny - savy/steady
  • cappie - ice cream cone
  • cat sookins - wet and limp hair
  • chaap - hit
  • chav - work hard/struggle
  • cloot - cloth
  • clype - someone who tells tales or to tell tales
  • coorse - nasty
  • cowk - retch
  • cowpe - turn over/turn upside down/dump
  • crabbit - grumpy
  • daftie - daft person
  • doo - pigeon
  • dight - wipe
  • ding - fall heavily (snow or rain)
  • dock - bum
  • dookers - swim suit
  • dottled - confused
  • dowp - bum
  • dreich - cold, wet and dull weather
  • drookit - soaked
  • dubby - muddy
  • fair tricket - delighted
  • feil -foolish person
  • fly cup or fly - a break for a cup of tea
  • fooshty - musty/stale/dirty
  • glaikit - vacant/silly
  • greet - cry
  • gype - silly person
  • gypit - silly
  • hoast - cough
  • loon - boy
  • loup - jump
  • lug - ear
  • mochit - dirty
  • neep - turnip/silly person
  • puckle - few
  • puddock - frog
  • quine - girl
  • scunnert - fed up
  • sheen - shoes
  • sharn - shit
  • skitter - diarrhea 
  • smit - infect
  • teuchter - someone brought up in a rural area
  • toonser - someone brought up in a city area
  • vratch - nusciance
  • wee - small
  • wifie - woman
